Jawaharlal Nehru University has decided to increase the number of women security guards on campus following the violent attack on a girl student by her classmate.
The university had constituted a10-member committee which has submitted its report recommending an increase in women security staff on campus and to establish a dedicated counselling line manned by trained counsellors and crisis intervention.
On July 31, an undergraduate student had entered the classroom armed with an axe, knife and pistol and attacked a girl student. The boy later committed suicide.
The university has also decided to set up an independent counselling centre for students. JNU vice-chancellor Prof. S.K. Sopory said that the committee has recommended further strengthening of student-faculty relations.
“Emphasis has been laid on sensitising students on issues of gender relationships. But the mindset of students towards these issues needs to change,” he said. A sub-committee has been set up for framing guidelines for harmonious relations between students and supervisors. The committee has recommended to improve facilities for students with disability, foreign students and women. Based on the recommendations, the university also has set up four Committees to prepare action plans for implementation.
