I joined an engineering college last month. I am not a very bright student, but I try to study hard. However, one of my teachers keeps yelling at me in class all the time. He picks on me for no reason. I study harder for his subject but he keeps asking me questions until I don’t have answers and then sometimes he yells at me and sometimes makes fun of me in front of the entire class. Should I complain to my HoD? I cannot give up this subject as it’s important for my course. I don’t know what to do.

A. Ask for an appointment with the teacher. Since you are in college, try to make this a professional interview. Put down in writing in an objective and rational manner your questions to him as he is your teacher and guru.
Start by mentioning a few things that you like about him, his teaching style and the subject. Then write about your efforts to improve. Finally, ask for his advice on what you should do to make your participation more useful in class. Putting it in writing will make it less likely that you will be too emotional.
The teacher and guru in him, his higher self, will respond. If this does not improve matters, you can involve your parents.
I am part of a research team in my office. I am good at what I do. I work hard to finish all my assignments on time. However, when it comes to social outings, I am not very keen on them. My colleagues and boss go out often and party almost every other weekend. But I am a very private person and do not like to mingle too much with office people. However, I recently realised that this is affecting my career growth. How should I deal with it? Even if I try I am not a party person and can’t understand how social circle can affect career growth.

A. Social interaction with peers can range from study groups and movie outings to parties. You could choose any method by which you can get to know people better. Involve your friends, family and others to interact with people in office. Inviting a small group out for a meal at home or a local hangout can help. Do not do anything you are uncomfortable with. Anything that is against your principles need not be part of the plan. Build a social network around you, based on a book club, debating circle, or anything that will improve your social network.
Make your workspace clean and comfortable. Surround it with happy pictures.
