Music of a rooted Indian with a global spirit

After having staged more than 600 concerts in over 10 countries, singer-songwriter from Bengaluru, Raghu Dixit has stopped counting, for he goes anywhere music takes him. After performing at the Bacardi Weekender event in Hard Rock Cafe last night, Raghu says Delhi has become one of his favourite cities to perform in. “The crowds in Delhi are fantastic and we’ve always had some amazing concerts here,” says Raghu.
Earthy, rooted, colourful and vibrant are some of the words that describe the music of Raghu Dixit Project. Defining his music, Raghu says, “My music is an amalgamation of my traditional and rooted Indianness and my varied global influences. I love working with Indian folk music and literature and giving it my own spin and presenting it in a contemporary form.”
Besides music, what’s also interesting about the Raghu Dixit Project is the band’s name. “I joke that I ran out of creativity when it came to naming the band, but seriously, the idea was to explore and experiment with as many musicians as I can and each time I go on stage, there is a different vibe and something unique and new happens. As a band, we hardly rehearse, and it is all impromptu on the stage, feeding off each other’s energy and the crowd. It feels like a new project each time,” he explains.
After having released his debut album Antaragni: The Fire Within in the UK and signing more contracts with international companies, Raghu says it’s all hard work. “My debut music album was released a couple of years ago with Wrasse records and I have signed a contract with Sony AT. I wish I could have planned this 10 years ago! But very little in the music business happens just the way you plan it. You just need to do the best you can every single time and hope for things to fall in place,” he shares.
For now Raghu is concentrating on his Bollywood plans and churning out good music. “I plan to keep making great music! I have started working on a couple of Bollywood projects, and getting set to promote my new album. I am always keeping an eye out for anything interesting that comes my way,” he ends.
