The verdict evoked strong reactions across the political spectrum. Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj demanded the death sentence for all the accused. Congress leader Ambika Soni also sought the most stringent punishment for the convicts.
“The punishment should convey a message to those who dare to carry out such acts,” Ms Soni said. Sharing her view, CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat said that trials in such cases needed to be expedited.
