The ethnic unrest continues to rock Assam with several ethnic and non-tribal groups launching agitation opposing the decision of the government to demarcate various autonomous development councils besides holding the elections.
The problem started soon after the government announced dates for elections to the Mising Autonomous Council and the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council.
The angry non-Mising population of the proposed council revived their old agitation demanding ST status for Ahom community besides seeking exclusion of non-Mising areas from the Mising Autonomous Council. The All Assam Tai Ahom Students’ Union launched a vigorous protest by calling bandh, which turned violent on Thursday. Though, there were no casualty, police was forced to open fire to contain the protesters who resorted to arson and violence. More than a dozen of vehicles were set on fire. Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi intervened into the prevailing tension among the non-Mising community on Thursday and said that non-Mising areas would be excluded from the proposed council.
