A Pakistani court on Tuesday indicted former military ruler Pervez Musharraf for his role in the December 2007 assassination of former Pakistan PM Benazir Bhutto. She was killed in a gun and bomb attack in Rawalpindi.
“The court has indicted seven accused, including Pervez Musharraf, in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case”, a court official said.
Mr Musharraf, who is now fighting a series of cases, was brought to the Rawalpindi anti-terrorism court from Chak Shahzad sub-jail under heavy security. Judge Chaudhry Habibur Rahman heard the case.
This is the first time any of the four generals who have ruled Pakistan have been indicted. If convicted, Mr Musharraf faces the death sentence or life imprisonment.
During the hearing, an eight-page chargesheet was read to him, to which Mr Musharraf pleaded not guilty. He has been charged with murder and terrorism, and under the Explosives Act. The court later adjourned the hearing till August 27, directing the prosecution to present its evidence.
