Following the shocking incident of a student stabbing his female classmate in the classroom on Wednesday, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has constituted a five member preliminary fact finding committee to find out the cause of the incident.
The public relation officer Poonam Khurdesia said that nothing can be said with certainty and that a preliminary fact finding committee has been formed.
“The entire university community is deeply shocked and grieved by this very unfortunate and unprecedented incident. The university is known for harmonious and peaceful relations among various sections . The university has started the process of consultation to build confidence among students, especially girls’ students, she added.
The incident took everyone by surprise. A student, who did not want to be named, was shocked and couldn’t believe that a JNU student could have committed such a crime.
“It is very shocking and very tragic. I haven’t seen, heard of any such incident in my JNU life. However, we cannot say anything about what is going in one’s mind and it also talks loud of the entire upbringing,” said the student.
A student who knew the accused who died later said Akash never gave away any hint that he was in depression or he was in love with the female friend.
Former JNUSU president Sucheta De said that the real problem is about the perception of some people and how they view women. “It is time to introspect. The university has institutions dealing with gender equality and sensitisation, but more education is needed,” said De, the general secretary of All India Student’s Association (AISA), which holds three of the top four JNUSU posts.
