The rising crime graph in Uttar Pradesh is not due to poor governance or bad policing, as many would like to believe. It is a result of failed relationships, extra-marital affairs and betrayal in love affairs.
A study conducted by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows that of the 28,145 persons killed across the country in crimes of passion, 4,200 were in Uttar Pradesh alone.
Top police officials os the state attribute this trend to “lifestyle aberrations” that allow the young generations to cross boundaries with ease and an alarming frequency.
“Infidelity, extra-marital affairs and failed relationships have become the order of the day. A decade ago, social and family pressures prevented one from overstepping boundaries but, today, there are no such pressures. This relationship behaviour also brings in frustration that explains the growing brutality in execution of crime,” said a DG-rank officer.
In a recent incident in Kanpur, a woman had an affair with a married doctor and when the relationship started going awry, she murdered the doctor and chopped off his private parts. She later couriered the private parts to the doctor’s wife.
The official further explained that while an increasing degree of openness can be seen in the society, the degree of tolerance has reduced drastically.
In cases of suspected infidelity, extra-marital and failed relationships, either of the spouses tries to get rid of their partner without even making an effort at reconciliation or amicable parting, he said.
Interestingly, in the trend of growing illicit relationships, the Internet and mobilephones are playing important role.
“There have been cases where a person has been involved in multiple relationships through the mobile and Internet and the other partners have taken the services of hackers to spy on their suspect,” said an investigating officer.
Relating a recent case, he said that the wife of a prominent businessman was in a relationship with a young NRI whom she had met on a social networking site.
“The husband was suspicious because of the long hours she spent chatting and he quietly got a hacker to hack his wife’s account. He accessed her entire conversation history and then assaulted her. Their families intervened and got the couple separated before any untoward incident could take place,” the investigating officer recalled.
