Former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar died six years ago in July 2007 but the Uttar Pradesh estate department continues to list him as an “illegal occupant” of government accommodation.
According to a RTI document signed by Umakant Misra, undersecretary and public information officer, action is being taken against the late Chandra Shekhar by the UP Estate Department under Act 12 of the State Estate department rule, 2010.
The former PM was allotted house no. 301-302 in the La Place Colony in Lucknow and the twin flats, according to the estate department, are still in the possession of his family. Chandra Shekhar’s son Neeraj is a Samajwadi Party MP from Ballia. According to the RTI document that came in response to a RTI query filed by one Mahendra Shukla, another illegal occupant is BJP MP Lalji Tandon who is staying in bungalow No. 9 in Darul Shafa without any allotment. “Mr Tandon was asked to move into the bungalow during the Mayawati regime but there is no formal allotment of the bungalow and hence the possession of the same is unauthorised,” said a estate department official.
Dayaram Prajapati, MLC and now UP minister, is in possession of bungalow no. 7 in Darul Shafa even though the allotment was cancelled some months ago and the matter is in court. Rajesh Agarwal (BJP MLA), Shahid Manzoor (SP), Rajesh Yadav (SP) and Dharampal Singh (BSP) are unauthorised occupants of their current place of residence. Rajesh Agarwal is staying without allotment at 53, Gulistan Colony. Shahid Manzoor, Rajesh Yadav and Dharampal Singh are staying without allotment at house numbers 101, 202 and 602 La Place Colony.

Similarly, nearly one dozen government officers who have been transferred out of Lucknow have not yet vacated their official accommodation and six advocates who have ceased to be on the government panel, have also not vacated their official accommodations.
