Almost 20 days after a young, newly-wed, civil engineer was killed when his speeding motorcycle’s front wheel went into a deep pothole on a bridge causing the vehicle to flip over in Malad (east), an FIR has been registered against the company which built the bridge and was accountable for its maintenance.
The Kurar police said the incident occurred at around 8 pm on the southbound stretch of the Western Express Highway while it was raining heavily. The deceased, Umesh Shinde (28) was descending a bridge located near Pushpa Park, Ban-Dongri. As it was raining
heavily, Mr Shinde could not see the pothole, which had a radius of over half a foot, and a depth of six inches.
Senior police inspector, Subhash Dafle of Kurar said, “The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) Limited had entrusted the work of constructing the bridge to Amey Developers and J Kumar Limited. The companies had to take care of the maintenance for three years.”
“The maintenance period’s deadline was September 15, 2013. So, they are responsible for not filling up the pothole. We are now probing which persons from the company can be arrested. The
FIR was registered on Monday under IPC section 304 A (causing death due to negligence),” added Mr Dafle.
Sub-inspector Sudhakar Mhamunkar, the investigating officer, said, “Mr Shinde did not suffer any external injuries. He was wearing a helmet as well, but he was around 90 kg. When he fell,
he badly injured his liver, and suffered internal injuries on his chest as well as the lower part of his abdomen.
