Traffic at the busy subway system here was disrupted briefly during the rush hour on Monday after a man jumped onto the tracks at a station.
The man, in his 30s, jumped off the platform onto the tracks at Tian’anmen East Station near Tian’anmen Square in central Beijing on Line 1 at 7.55 am, the official Xinhua news agency quoted the Beijing Subway Company as saying. The man suffered slight head injuries and was taken to hospital. Doctors said his injuries are not life threatening. According to officials, it was an attempt to commit suicide by the man. The line’s train services were immediately halted and did not resume until 8.11 am. Loudspeakers on the trains asked passengers to wait patiently and not to panic. A number of trains running on the line reversed. Entry to three stations was temporarily restricted. In July last year, a man in his 20s jumped onto the tracks at a different station of the same line and was killed when a train hit him. Line 1 and Line 2 are Beijing’s busiest subway lines. Beijing subway stations were highly guarded with multiple layers of security.
