She had a much critically acclaimed yet controversial stint in Delhi Belly and in spite of her unconventional looks, Poorna Jagannathan has a fervent niche fan following in the industry. Though she was recently seen in Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, Poorna says that she is waiting for the right script to dive back into Bollywood. Till then, her American TV series and her play Nirbhaya are keeping her busy.
At the recent screening of Delhi Belly at Zorba The Buddha in the city, Poorna says that this is definitely an exciting and interesting time for the Indian film industry. “I recently watched Kai Po Che and it’s such a great addition to the body of films that are non-conventional, beautifully told and commercially successful. That’s the genre I’m looking forward to being part of,” says Poorna.
An American actress who’s appeared in shows like Royal Pains, Law and Order, and The Game, Poorna recently signed a show called Criminal Justice. Though the show’s future is uncertain since it starred James Gandolfini who passed away last week. Talking about her experience while shooting for YJHD, Poorna insists that all good things said about Ranbir are true, “He is immensely talented, sincere, shy and a great friend.”
Talking about the play Nirbhaya, Poorna says the play is a response to the gang-rape of Nirbhaya in December 2012. “As women, we keep silent about much of the violence that goes on daily in our lives. This play is about facing our truths, breaking silences and looking for a way to move forward,” says Poorna. The play will open in London, then travel to Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
