The Congress is mounting pressure on the government to call a special session of Parliament to expose the Opposition on ambitious Food Security Bill.
“A special session of Parliament on the Food Security Bill would be politically desirable and technically feasible, “ a senior AICC official said on Thursday, suggesting that the Opposition parties would not cooperate with the government in the passage of the bill during the Monsoon Session of Parliament under one pretext or other.
While this bill is going to be the main election plank of the Congress which will re-connect it with poor, the Opposition would oppose it to check the Congress from getting political mileage out of it. He said that the Opposition, which has been disrupting Parlia-ment, will be exposed if it adopts similar tactics in a special session called to pass the bill. If the bill is brought in the Monsoon Session, the Opposition would again rake up various issues and stall it, he said.
And Ordinance route is also less feasible as the government would have to bring it before Parliament for passage within six months.
With a special session requiring a 15-day notice, such a session could still be a possibility by July 15 or July 20, the leader said.
At the same time, he made it clear that a decision on a special session depends upon the attitude of the Opposition as such a session cannot be convened without taking the Opposition on board.
