Students who failed to secure admissions in degree colleges of their choice are now facing a fresh challenge of registering themselves on the University of Mumbai website. Students said that registering each time while applying for a new course or courses for a different stream was proving to be strenuous task. They cannot apply for a new course, as it is not registered with the University, they added.
Manish Talati, who had applied in a suburban college for the BMS course, but failed to make it to the merit list and decided to opt for BMM, the college asked him to re-register on the varsity website to apply for the new course.
“Several other students are also facing a similar predicament. Without re-registering we are not qualified for admissions to any course. However, the problem is that the re-registration process takes time and by the time we manage to register and go back to the college, the seats for such courses is also exhausted. Consequently, we are left with no option but to register for the third time. This goes on till the time we have managed to secure admission,” said Mr Talati.
Criticising the registration system, management council member Dilip Karande said that the entire idea of online registration was flawed and was only adding to the woes of the students. “Instead of registering each time they want to take admission for a different course, the University should have kept a single registration criteria. This is absolutely nonsensical and the University needs to rethink its strategies,” said Mr Karande.
Dr Naresh Chandra, University pro-vice-chancellor, said that it was not a problem at all and online registration would continue till the admissions were not completed. “The online registration process is absolutely free and students can register as many times as they want,” said Dr Chandra.
