[1]“While many Carnatic musicians have successfully traversed to Hindustani classical forms, not many Hindustani musicians veer towards Carnatic music. We would love to see that happen as well,” says Komala Varadan, founder, Kalaikoodam, a society for promotion of arts, literature and culture that recently organised the ‘Young Musician’s Festival’ at the India International Centre that saw some of the best Carnatic music practitioners from the country coming together for a musical sojourn. The three-day festival included performances by R. K. Govindarajan, Chandana Bala, Ramakrishnan Murthy, Tulasi Viswanath, Manasi Prasad and Sriram Parasuram.
“I am opening my performance with a varnam, followed by a half hour recital of pure Carnatic music, then followed by Anubhuti, a fusion of Carnatic with Hindustani and Western music aided by sitar, guitar, violin, tabla and mridangam,” says R.K. Govindarajan.
Over the last few years, there has been revival in interest for Carnatic music. “The online channels like Youtube have made music accessible among youngsters. But the need for a good teacher can’t be substituted with it,” says Varadan.
