The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has set up a control room for monsoon, which has already been operational since June 1, 2013.
The control room has been set up with a view to minimise inconvenience to the vehicular and pedestrian traffic at various project sites of the authority.
The control room officials will also ensure the smooth flow of rainwater at various project sites and work round-the-clock to avoid any eventuality in case of excessive rain. The control room is being monitored by five MMRDA nodal
officers and managed by 41 officials in three shifts.
“The contractors have been asked to very strictly adhere to the safety measures. They are also instructed to stringently follow norms as far as barricading, reinstatement of the damaged road works, clearing and disposal of the muck on the roads.
The contractors will also maintain de-watering pumps of adequate capacity, where there is no connectivity in storm water drains and also at the water-logging spots,” said Ashwini Bhide, additional metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.

Mumbai Varsity rectifies tech glitch

The University of Mumbai overcame the technical glitches plaguing its online enrolment process as nearly 30,000 students managed to enrol themselves on Tuesday itself. According to sources, the process was going slow due to server and bandwith problems from the service provider, which was rectified, enabling students to not only log in to the University website, but also upload data easily. A University official said that till Tuesday evening, the enrolment count had reached 91,875. “With nearly 1.3 lakh students expected to enrol, the number indicates that almost 65 per cent of the students have managed to enrol successfully,” said the official. With enrolment made mandatory for admission to first-year degree college courses, students were in a quandary, as failing to enrol would have negated their chance of getting admitted to a degree college from the date when admissions start on June 6. “After receiving numerous complaints from the students, we got in touch with MKCL and asked them to increase the server space as well as bandwith,” he said.
