Flaunt fashion that flatters figure

In times when young girls are obsessed with the idea of sporting the latest fads, Bollywood actress and style icon Deepika Padukone mentioned in a recent interview that it is good to keep up with the times, but fashion trends should not be followed blindly. We check with style gurus about how much is too much when it comes to flaunting trends off the ramp, and where does one draw the line.

It’s very important to have a strong individual fashion statement, and depending on that one should choose trends that blend in with the personal style, feels designer Pria Kataaria Puri. She says, “I don’t believe in following fashion trends blindly, but at the same time I believe in taking risks and trying new trends that enhance your look and bring freshness to your wardrobe. I feel Indian women are generally very conservative and like to play it safe. In that case, one should pick favourites from the runway and give those a twist of their own style instead of just copying runway models or mannequins at the store.”
Before choosing trends, one must keep in mind one’s body type, skin tone, physical assets, personality and lifestyle before following any fashion trends, suggests designer Payal Jain. She says, “I do feel most people just blindly clone runway trends, which is most unflattering and inappropriate in some cases. They must consider several things before doing so; such as the occasion, adaptability of the ramp piece to their body type and whether it is a flattering colour and silhouette for them or not.
“Most people want to simply clone what they see on the ramp, which really is not possible because you watch a fashion show with a lot of drama of lights, music, make-up, hair, ambience and styling. One must keep one’s own personality and physicality in mind in order to choose a look that enhances one’s beauty and confidence.”
For accessory designer Shruti Kaul Sachdeva, trends are important but comfort is the first priority. She says, “If you are comfortable with what you are wearing, confidence reflects and fashion blends in. Runway designs have to be adapted in our everyday fashion carefully. Trends can be followed to a certain extent but one has to make sure that it’s not overdone in any way. Highlight any one factor, be it through an accessory, make-up or shoes and keep the rest subtle.”
For designer Rajat Tangri the mantra to get the balanced look off the ramp is to choose the right trend that flatters your body type and flaunt it with confidence. He says, “I would say that a lot of people give more emphasis on comfort and style, and people have their own comfort zone. When picking up a latest trend make sure to keep your body type in mind. Also, you have to be confident enough to carry the outfit and accessories because if you don’t have the right balance, your look will backfire.”
