Lashing out at Board of Control of Cricket in India boss N. Srinivasan, noted lawyer Rahul Mehra on Monday called for a “ban on the Indian Premier League” following charges of cheating, forgery and fraud against the former’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan and the spot-fixing scandal that has rocked the T20 extravaganza.
“All we need is a free and fair investigating agency; not a caged parrot who takes orders from its political master. And then only will the whole truth surface,” Mehra was quoted as saying, after Srinivasan announced a three-member disciplinary committee to probe Meiyappan’s alleged involvement in betting and spot-fixing in the IPL.
Mehra challenged Srinivasan to “ask the Supreme Court to constitute a three-member independent committee” to look into the matter.
“I challenge Srinivasan to ask SC to constitute a 3 Member Independent Comm to go into all these aspects if he has nothing to hide. Will he:),” Mehra wrote on his Twitter handle. On the day, the lawyer also questioned the motives of several BCCI officials, who have been silent so far.
“Srini has the power to mute political stalwarts like Jaitley’s NaMo’s, Scindia’s, Pawar’s, etc. and he wants us to believe that is disciplinary,” Mehra said, adding that the IPL should be banned until stringent laws were in place.
“Ban IPL... If the parent (BCCI/IPL) itself propagates all illegal activities and uses its clout to successfully stall investigations, what are you teaching your children (players)? It’s all fair when it comes to BCCI/ IPL.
“IPL is a club tournament. Its a tamasha and please take it as a soap opera which entertains people. Lets just stop it at that,” he added.
