The Saradha scam witnessed twin twists on Saturday when the chit fund company owner Sudipta Sen was remanded by the court in judicial custody as the detective department (DD) of the Bidhannagar city police did not seek his remand further, while his top aide Debjani Mukherjee skipped court production and got admitted to a private hospital complaining of illness.
In the morning, Mr Sen was taken to the Bidhannagar court for his production from the New Town police station with completion of his second police remand of nine days. To a question before his entry to the court room, he reaffirmed his satisfaction in the police investigation, like he had done in his affidavit to the Calcutta high court opposing a CBI probe in the Saradha scam, and said, “Khushi... khushi (I am happy).” Another aide of the Saradha owner, Arvind Singh Chauhan, was also produced with him in connection with four cases. Earlier, Debjani, guarded by the cops, walked out of the New Town police station, travelled in a police jeep instead of an ambulance to a private hospital in Salt Lake and took admission at around 7.30 am.
She had complained of stomach pain and vomiting at around 8 pm on Friday, sources revealed.
At night, Debjani was taken to Bidhannagar State General Hospital for a check-up.
She later returned to the police station after her check-up. Doctors at the private hospital, however, found nothing critical in Debjani’s health apart from an infection and has put her under saline and medication, sources disclosed. At the court, Mr Sen’s lawyer Samir Das prayed for his bail which was rejected.
The prime accused had to stand in the witness box for a while and blamed some of his company employees for the cheating by duplicating the original software his company had used, according to sources. Mr Das said, “In none of the cases the police sought Mr Sen’s custody. While giving ruling in three of the four cases, the court sent Mr Sen and Mr Chauhan to judicial custody till May 22, 23 and 31.
