New York/Melbourne, July 20: In a bizarre hate-crime, a man has gouged out his roommate’s eyes in New York and threatened to kill him saying I hate Indian people.
Latchman Ramnarine, a Queensman who is being treated for depression at a group residence, was blinded by a racist who ripped out his eyes, a lawsuit alleges.
Jason Wallace used his bare hands to rip out Latchman Ramnarine’s eyes, New York Post reported Monday. Wallace pleaded not guilty to assault with intent to disfigure.
Wallace became unstable and aggressive, said Ram-narine’s lawyer, Michael Grossman. “He repeatedly threatened my client with words like I will kill you and break your bones because I hate Indians,” he said.
Meanwhile in Melbourne, an Indian student was attacked by six youths here resulting in serious facial injuries after he got involved in a brawl trying to save a compatriot from being beaten up, the latest in a series of assaults on the community in Australia.
Twenty-four-year-old Bharat Thapar is awaiting surgery in a local hospital following the last night incident which took place in a Melbourne suburb.
Thapar saw another Indian, Ratan, being bashed up on Monday night near Carnish Road in Oakleigh South, Sumeet, a friend of the victim, said.
“He stopped his car and came out to stop the fight. But the youths instead took on him.”
“Bharat has received some serious face injuries and he is now waiting for a surgery as advised by doctors in Monash Hospital where he is admitted to,” Sumeet said. — PTI, IANS
