Quirky is cool in haute summer

Fashion designers love to be hatke about everything when it comes to their collections. And that’s why the collections this summer boast of a bouquet of quirky names — like Raat Ki Rani by Nikasha Tawadey, Ishq-e-Dilli by Anupama Dayal, Rajputana Bikers by Samant Chauhan, Pitari by Niki Mahajan, Sadak Chhap by Nida Mahmood and many more. The summer collection with soothing colours and cool fabric come with some of the coolest names attached to them.

Fashion designer Rahul Khanna says that giving interesting names to not just collections but even clothes is becoming a trend in the fashion industry. “Interesting names stay in the memory much longer and help in attracting buyers. Designers these days want their collection to have an identity of its own. So what could be a better way for it than calling it something different,” says Rahul.
Masaba Gupta’s Summer/Resort 2013 collection is called Sorbet. “The name justifies the lots of pink, pista green and lighter colours that are used in the collection. My collection is always a bit quirky. So I try to come up with the names that go with the designs,” says Masaba.
Nida Mahmood, who called her Spring/Summer ’13 collection Sapna Cinema, says, “I always come up with quirky names for my collection. I cannot have a name that’s regular or simple to define my collection. Since I enjoy doing things hatke, my first collection was called High On Chai. Since then I tried to give interesting names like Machis, Sadak Chhap and The Adventures of Capt. Must! Qalandar to my collections,” says Nida.
Samant Chauhan’s Spring/ Summer ’13 collection is called Poshak — an extension of his previous collection Rajputana Bikers. Gautam Gupta named his summer collection Chilled Strawberries while Rajdeep Ranawat called his A Grecian Finesse. “I am planning to call my next summer collection Juicy since we needed a spicy name to go with the collection. Though it’s a working title, an interesting name can be an added edge to a collection,” he adds.
