A cameraman chases a girl through the streets of London and back to her apartment. The woman being followed appears flattered initially, but slowly gets disturbed and anxious. Shot in late November 1968 by Nic Knowland and commissioned by Yoko and John Lennon, the 75-minute film mainly characterised a violent, sexually charged atmosphere.
Austrian artist Fiona Rukschcio has re-filmed the original using the same shots in the same locations, but without the woman. Retaped Rape will be screened at Ojas Art Gallery along with a series of photographs documenting the making of the film, as well as photo-collages. “This shift raises a series of questions about the links between camera idiom, gazes, violence and places as collective storehouses of memory,” says Fiona.
She followed the same route as the original to shoot her film. “The title of the film bears a certain sensation which leads the audience to questioning what is rape and where does it start ,” says the artist whose works often deal with violence against women.
The film will be screened on April 26, at 7 pm.
