In a significant archaeological discovery, the remains of an ancient city that may be 2,500 years old have been found at Tarighat, 30 km from here.
The surface findings at the site located on the left bank of the river Kharun, a tributary of the Sheonath, indicate that the ancient city underneath was a highly developed urban settlement and flourished in 3rd century BC. There are some indications it could even date back to 6th century BC.
Preliminary digging unearthed Kushan and Satavahan coins, a stone seal, pottery, beads of semi-precious stones, terracotta and bones. The ASI has granted the state archaeological department a licence to excavate the site.
