In a major breakthrough the Assam police on Thursday apprehended a woman Ulfa cadre from Jorhat who had come from Burma for the treatment of a bullet injury that she had sustained in cross-firing between the Ulfa cadres at a camp.
The security sources following her movement said that a joint team of the CRPF and the state police apprehended Monika Konwar, alias, Arpita Gogoi on July 13.
Admitting the incident of firing between the Ulfa cadres in Burma camp, she confessed before interrogators that she was going to Jorhat to get the injury treated.
The security sources said that her arrest was important for the security agencies as she has corroborated many activities of Ulfa rebels across the border.
She also confirmed that cadres of 28th battalion were called back to Burma camp and they are still there as Ulfa chief Paresh Baruah has warned them from going to the field without his permission.
Acting on specific tip-off the troops of the 119 battalion of the CRPF apprehended the woman at the outskirts of Jorhat near Teok, security sources said, adding that she had to leave the Burma camp for her treatment.
Meanwhile, the home ministry on Thursday appointed former Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief P.C. Haldar as the chief interlocutor in the Ulfa peace process.
“The government of India, by an order, has appointed P.C. Haldar, former director IB, as interlocutor to take forward the process of initiating peace process with Ulfa,” security sources said.
He will be reporting to the Union home secretary and home minister. Though, the MHA has announced Mr Haldar’s name as the interlocutor for the Ulfa an official appointment is still awaited.
Mr Haldar is already acting as interlocutor with several militant outfits holding ceasefire.
