[1]Dennis Lillee on Thursday welcomed the rotation policy initiated by Cricket Australia to protect the fast bowlers from injuries and said cricket boards across the globe should implement the same.
Lillee, who was associated with the MRF pace foundation until this year said, “It’s important to manage the workload of the pacers considering the amount of cricket that is played. I suggested this long back to be honest. But, at the same time it has to be done in a more smooth manner and depending upon the series and the opposition you play against.”
The Aussie legend also said its up to the bowlers to protect themselves from injury lay-offs. “As fast bowler it is important to follow what your coach says. Only the bowler will understand his body well. You got to plan accordingly,” he said. He also called the pacers to go an extra yard to hone their skills. “You need to have that extra bit of energy in you to become one of the best. An upcoming pacer has to work beyond what the coach asks for. There has to be a hunger within. Focus, fitness and flexibility and his adaptability to different conditions is key for any pacer,” Lillee added.
The 63-year-old was all praise for Ishwar Pandey, who emerged as the highest wicket-taker of the Ranji season. “It always feels good when one of the players you trained performs well. Although he is not express quick, he can put the batsman under trouble with his movement, considering none of the batsmen like to play the moving-ball,” he said. Lillee also said it was ideal for Australia to arrive two weeks before the first Test. “It should help them immensely. Considering it is a big series, they will get plenty of time to prepare. There is no better preparation than arriving early and getting used to the local conditions,” he observed.
