DERC hikes power tariff by upto 3%

Further burning a hole in the pockets of Delhiites, the power regulator Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has announced another hike in the power tariff in the city.
Delhites will have to shell out more money for electricity from Friday with the power regulator DERC effecting upto three per cent hike in tariff to adjust the power purchase cost of distribution companies.
The hike will be three per cent for consumers of BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd and BSES Yamuna Power Ltd while the increase for those getting electricity from Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd is 1.5 per cent.
“We have effected a three per cent hike in tariff for BYPL and BRPL consumers. The hike has been fixed at 1.5 per cent for TPDDL customers,” DERC secretary Jayashree Raghuraman said.
“The BYPL had sought 7.44 per cent, BRPL had sought 9.18 per cent and TPDDL had sought 2.80 per cent hike in tariff. After preliminary examination it was found that a certain percentage of hike is needful so the DERC has issued letter to the CEOs of the three discoms regarding the power tariff hike,” said a senior DERC official.
The hike will come into effect from Friday for the next three months, following which the DERC is likely to review the increase based on cost of buying power by the discoms.
The hike comes seven months after DERC had increased the tariff by a whopping 26 per cent for domestic consumers.
