From mohawks to blunt cuts to frizzy perms to ponytails and hairbands, footballers’ hairstyles at the ongoing World Cup are the subject of much speculation and emulation.
Along with their dipping free kicks and swift passes, fans are admiring the soccer players’ hairdos.
With Fifa fever at its highest and the finals not too far away, fans are on the edge of their seats, supporting their favourite teams. At this point, a lot of youngsters are opting for haircuts similar to those of their favourite players, and many have no problem spending hours in front of the mirror just to get an exactly identical style and look.
The hairstyles of players like Ronaldo and Kaka top the list of many of these fans.
Ganesh Narayan, an engineering graduate, remarks, “I have been following the games regularly and I was really disappointed when Brazil lost to Netherlands. I was hoping to see Brazil in the finals. The thing about Kaka’s hairstyle is that it can be easily replicated and it is quite a practical style. I went in for this style about a week before the World Cup began and am going to maintain it even after the matches come to an end, even though Brazil is not qualifying.”
Geoffrey Ebenezer, a student, adds, “A week before the World Cup began, I went in for a hairstyle change and got a mohawk like Beckham’s. I have always been a big fan of David Beckham, and though he wasn’t playing this time I still copied his hairstyle.”
It has always been the trend among teenagers to go in for hairstyles similar to their cricket idols, but these days many of the youngsters are switching to their football idols.
Shibani Vasundaran, owner of a chain of beauty salons, says, “We have seen a couple of youngsters coming in requesting Beckham’s hairstyle. We expect the craze to increase after the Fifa World Cup gets over because now everybody is concentrating on watching the matches. But what we have observed is that a lot of students are going in for the mohawk style, which is more classical. This hairstyle can be styled into a formal look during the day and can be changed into a funky, party look during the night, with just a little bit of gel. These styles that give you freedom to switch your look from day to night are a hit among many today.”
Celebrity hairstylist Jawed Habib says, “From the start of the World Cup, people have been supporting teams like Argentina, Italy and Brazil. But this Cup has had its twists and turns, with the three favourite teams exiting in the quarter finals. When it comes to football hairstyles, I feel the youngsters are experimenting with their own styles these days. Many students are entering college and the emphasis for them is on looking good to impress their school mates. They are experimenting a lot.”
