Vishal’s funny story got Anushka to say yes

Ever since she first stepped into Bollywood, Anushka Sharma hasn’t made one false move. Even with a rare film (like Ladies vs Ricky Bahl) that hasn’t worked at the box office, the actress has always garnered appreciation for her spunky style and effortless acting.

Now, with Matru Ki Baijli Ka Mandola, critical acclaim is certain to follow — with praise already coming in for her unconventional look in the movie. But the actress almost might not have been a part of the movie.
Apparently, seeing director Vishal Bhardwaj’s previous films had given Anushka the impression that he worked only on dark, serious films, and she believed that Matru might turn out to be somewhat similar in tone. But the minute Vishal narrated the film to her, Anushka loved it and said yes. “She was laughing constantly while Vishal narrated the story to her. She thought it was hilarious,” a source close to the actress said.
Anushka was surprised that Vishal was working on a comedy, but given her newfound understanding of the auteur’s work, our source tells us that the actress is encouraging him to flex his moviemaking muscles in other genres.
