In what may force the court to reopen two Tada cases of extortion implicating Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti on Saturday produced the original files and case diaries which were missing from the police station leading to closure of the case. In fact, Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had been acquitted in two Tada cases a few years back by the top court because the case diary and investigation report of the investigating officer of the two cases had gone missing mysteriously from Chandmari and Panbazar police station of Assam.
The court, while disposing of the cases against the minister, had rejected to consider the reconstructed case diary and investigation report of the police.
The attempts of reopening the cases through PIL had also failed but on Saturday the KMSS presented entire missing files of the case in a press conference and announced that NGO has decided to hand over all the files to the Supreme Court.
NGO general secretary Akhil Gogoi, who demanded that minister should be dropped from the Cabinet with immediate effect, said, “We wanted to prove our charges that the state is being ruled by mafia.” Mr Gogoi, who was adjudged best RTI activists of the country for which Congress president Congress president Sonia Gandhi had felicitated him, said, “We are also going to hand over a set of these official documents which had gone missing from the police station to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Union home minister P. Chidambaram soon.” A copy of the interrogation report of an extortion case (No. 77/1991 of Chandmari and No. 15/1991 of Panbazar police station) were released to the media wherein Mr Sarma, who was then member of All-Guwahati Students Union, had confessed he was an active member of Ulfa and helped the outfit in extorting the businessmen of Guwahati.
“I know our organisation (Ulfa) collected a handsome amount of money from various business establishments of Guwahati,” he confessed.
