The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is running behind the schedule in the completion of its Commonwealth Games-related work, with the status report saying that 40 to 45 per cent of work still need to be carried out. The delay in execution of work is despite the fact that Delhi government has set a deadline of July 15 for the MCD to complete all Games-related work.
However, senior officials stated that the project for parking of buses which will transport athletes during the Games is almost 95 per cent complete. The stretch of this project runs from the main Games venue, the JLN Stadium to Sunhari, Kushak and DPS Nullahs.
The officials acknowledged that the status of improvement of roads near the stadia show that the progress of work on Bhishma Pitamah Marg is 75 per cent complete, while widening and improvement of the road connecting 5th Avenue to JLN Stadium is 98 per cent over. However, about 45 per cent of the work is still remaining in improvement and strengthening of 5th Avenue Road from India Habitat Centre to Kushak Nullah.
The delay in execution of streetscaping work is still there even as the monsoon scare looms large. The streetscaping on one road near Thyagraj Stadium is complete and is 80 per cent over in another but 40 per cent work remains on Dilip Singh Marg at Siri Fort Complex.
In the Delhi University area, the improvement of Guru Teg Bahadur Road is 53 per cent over. However, the work on University Road and Roshanara Road is 58 per cent complete and on Boulevard Road from Bhagwan Dass Chowk to St. Stephen’s Hospital is just 35 per cent complete.
The MCD had maintained that all work would be completed by July 30, which now appears to be a tough task and the projects could further stretch into the first week of August.
