Even though 450 petitions were filed identifying various scanning and sonography centres in the state that were flouting government rules, no action has been taken against them by the government. Not only that, a doctor who had been identified and suspended for providing sex selective abortion, has been placed in the state advisory committee.
“A majority of the scanning centres were involved in gender determination and also did not preserve the scanning reports. They did not even have the necessary records that should be maintained under the PCPNDT Act (Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique-Prohibition),” said Ms A. Gandhimati, a social activist fighting against sex selective abortion.
Speaking to this newspaper on the sidelines of an event organised here by Campaign against Sex Selective Abortion, Gandhimati said this could have been prevented if there were increased representation by the civil society in the state advisory committee for PCPNDT.
