Foodie secrets of sports stars

For most of the year, sports stars travel around the world for tournaments. One thing that they crave while away from home is good food. Sports writer Boria Majumdar recently launched his book, Cooking On The Run in the capital, and opened a window to the food habits and favourite dishes of boxer Vijender Singh, tennis player Sania Mirza and wrestler Sushil Kumar, as they interacted with the author during the launch.

After winning the silver medal at London Olympics, Sushil Kumar couldn’t have anything to eat as media interviews were lined up. However at Beijing Olympics in 2008, Sushil Kumar overate. “Beijing mein maine daba ke khaya. Uss time koi mujhe jaanta nahi tha toh itni pareshani nahi hui thi,” he says. Being a vegetarian, he also carries packed food with him to countries abroad, for fear of not getting proper vegetarian food. He believes that food can set everything right.
Vijender talked about his recent experience while trainng at London Olympics. As breakfast was not being served, he took it upon himself to prepare it. “Main achhi omelette aur chai bana leta hoon,” said Vijender, who loves Chinese food.
Sania Mirza talked about her celebrations with Mahesh Bhupathi after winning the recent French Open mixed doubles. “We went to an Indian restaurant at around 10. I loved the food out there and we ended up hogging. It felt even better as we were eating Indian food almost after two weeks. Usually after a win, we don’t hold back. We eat whatever we want to,” she said.
