One person was killed and another injured in police firing in Nadia’s Tehatta on Wednesday morning. This was the second incident of police firing on protesting public in the recent past tarnishing the image of the Mamata Banerjee government which had pledged that its police would never target defenceless people. Two weeks ago, the police allegedly fired on villagers of Dubrajpur in Birbhum when they tried to prevent it from forcibly retrieving an earth-mover machine from Loba village. All Opposition parties have condemned the incident alleging that the police has become trigger-happy.
The violence in Tehatta erupted at around 8.15 am. Over 300 people had blocked the Karimpur-Krishna-nagar state highway to protest the denial of permission for Jagadh-atri Puja at a particular venue. The angry mob reportedly chased the sub divisional police officer. He along with his body guard climbed on the roof of a house of a person. It was from the rooftop that the police opened fire in which one person was killed. After 45-year-old Ashok Sen who was stated to be a BJP supporter was declared brought dead in the hospital, the mob fury intensified. The crowd set ablaze six police vehicles. Later a huge police force arrived on the trouble spot and brought the situation under control.

hillary pushes india, aussie military ties
Melbourne, Nov. 14: US on Wednesday backed Australia’s growing engagement with India with the secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton stressing that a deepening military cooperation should include naval exercise.
Describing Australia and the Asia-Pacific region as a key focus of America’s expanding engagement in the region, Ms Clinton now on a visit here, said that both India and Australia should work closely together, Sydney Morning Herald reported.
The US secretary of state, in the course of her address to the Australia-United States Ministerial (AUSMIN) meeting in Perth, referred India as the “world’s largest democracy and a dynamic emerging economy” and said “we would welcome joint Australia-Indian naval vessel exercises in the future.”
