Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday said that his biggest failure was on corruption front, which he has not been able to contain effectively.
Asserting that state has registered a significant growth in all the field under his leadership, Mr Gogoi told reporters, “Though, there is corruption but people are also not coming forward to lodge complaints.”
“I have never said that there is no corruption. There are corruptions in almost all the departments. We need to check the system to stop corruption,” said Mr Gogoi, while adding that his government is stressing e-governance, RTI Act, decentralisation of power and peoples empowerment to check corruption.
Accusing the social activists Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejariwal being financed by corrupt people, Mr Gogoi said, “I agree to many issues raked up by civil society groups but differ on their method.” Pointing out that RTI activist Akhil Gogoi, instead of helping, was destroying farmers’ future by engaging them into agitation, Mr Gogoi however clarified that corruption was a nationwide phenomenon and was not confined to his state alone.
Mr Gogoi here on Saturday also said that he does not need a certificate from Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) to prove that law and order situation of the state has improved. In reference to BCCI affidavit in the Guwahati High court pointing out that poor law and order was one of the reasons that Assam was not allotted IPL matches, Mr Gogoi told reporter, “I don’t care for such remarks.”
