The CBI, nodal agency for the Interpol in India, is all set to raise the issue of early execution of more than 170 letters rogatory (LRs), which are pending with the member countries, during the meeting of the general assembly of the International Police Organisation in Rome.
According to sources, around 170 LRs from India are pending with various member countries. CBI director Amar Pratap Singh will raise the issue at the Interpol general assembly to be held between November 5 and 8 in Rome.
“Indian law enforcement agencies had been promptly acting on requests from other member countries with due diligence. Only 60 LRs of different countries are pending with the Indian authorities,” sources said. “In today’s globalised context, effective international cooperation is essential for fighting crime that transcends international boundaries. We must realise that international cooperation is a two-way street, and is given on a reciprocal basis,” sources said. The conference is likely to be attended by more than 80 member countries.
The CBI director is also expected to meet his UK counterpart on the sidelines of the Interpol general assembly. He may request the UK authorities to expedite the extradition process of Ravi Shankaran, prime suspect in the naval war room leak case.
