Underworld don, Arun Gawli, on Monday filed an application before the principal judge of the sessions court, seeking transfer of the 2008 extortion case registered against him, from the present MCOCA court.
Gawli has argued that the trial in that case is being conducted by the same judge, who convicted him in connection with the murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar.
The gangster had filed an application claiming that being tried by the same judge (Prithviraj Chavan), who had sentenced him to life imprisonment in one of the murder cases, would be unfair. “The judge has made up his mind to believe that Gawli would not get justice and fair trial…and so, there is a need for a change of court in the trial. Also, it is a law that the accused party has the right to get the case transferred if the judge is biased against the accused (sic),” the application reads.
Nitin Sejpal, defence counsel for Gawli, confir-med that the application has been filed. “We want to get a fair chance to prove ourselves,” he said.

Jet’s BKC deal Cancelled Over Non-Payment

The MMRDA on Monday cancelled the deal for the Bandra Kurla Complex plot given to Jet Airways on account of non-payment of the value of the land, after the CM gave his nod.
Back in December 2011, The Asian Age had reported about MMRDA contemplating to cancel the deal as the airline had constantly failed to pay the money and had not started construction of its global headquarters, despite winning the bid in March 2008. This was despite MMRDA giving them repeated extensions to pay the requisite money.
“Around `10 crore will be forfeited as penalty from Jet Airways, which is an earnest deposit amo-unt,” said Rahul Asth-ana, metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.
If the cost of the plot, penalty and interest on the amount is summed up, the airlines is liable to pay `1,200 crore.
The airlines had quoted `826 crore for the plot in Bandra Kurla Complex and was awarded the plot with an area of 3,44,000 sq. metres.
After taking cue from the failed deal, the MMRDA has now extended the land development duration at Bandra Kurla Complex from the current four years to six years.
