The state government has started to review Anna University’s industrial quota admission, which is shrouded with lot of scams and irregularities.
State government sources say that companies that sponsor students for the quota would also be under the state’s scanner as several companies had admitted students taking money illegally.
Last year when AIADMK assumed power in the state, higher education minister P. Palaniappan announced in the Assembly that the previous DMK government admitted about 300 students illegally to Anna University in the pretext of industrial quota.
“The state government has found out that several students had no contact with the company that sponsored them.
Now the government plans to check whether the student had joined the same company or not, as companies can sponsor only students who will join them later”, the sources said.
The state government has asked the Anna University administration to prepare a detailed report about the history of industrial quota, list of students admitted ever since it was started and names of beneficiaries, including bureaucrats and university employees.
“Mr Palaniappan is expected to conduct a review meeting with Anna University officials soon to discuss the matter and report the details to chief minister”, the sources said.
“It is to be seen whether the state government will continue to have industrial quota from this academic year as the system has been misused by several persons so the government may think of withdrawing it”, a former vice-chancellor who did not want to be named said.
