In an attempt to reduce academic pressure from the students, the state government is all set to withdraw the unit test system from school education. From now on, the students will have to appear for annual examination only and not the unit tests, state school education minister Bratya Basu announced on Thursday.
Earlier, the students used to appear for five unit tests and one annual examination. As per the Right to Education Act, there is no promotion system till Class 8 which has been accepted by the state government. Following this, the state school education department had sought suggestions from the expert syllabus committee on the mode of examination process at the school level.
A meeting was held in this regard on Thursday between the committee officials and Mr Basu where it was decided to abolish the unit test system from the school level. Mr Basu also said that the schools have to conduct regular academic evaluation of the students instead of the unit tests. He later added that the same would also be implemented in Class 9 and Class 10.
Meanwhile, a section of the teachers and academic experts have welcomed the move citing that it would decrease the drop out rates. But at the same time, another section has observed that this would decrease the academic interest among the students.
