The upper floor gallery of the Queen’s Hall at Victoria Memorial was thrown open to public on Tuesday. The gallery contains a series of 12 paintings which depicts the important events in the life of Queen Victoria from her accession to the throne till her death.
Governor of West Bengal M.K. Narayanan officially opened the gallery along with Justice Chittatosh Mukherjee and Victoria Memorial Hall curator Swapan Chakraborty.
“I dedicate this upper floor gallery of the Queen’s Hall to the public. The re-opening of this gallery would allow the visitors to enjoy the treasures found here,” the governor said during the opening ceremony.
A visit at the gallery was followed by a performance of a quartet from Calcutta School of Music.
“It is a matter of pride to possess these paintings which were done by famous British portrait artist Frank Salisbury. These are not frescoes but oil paintings on canvas,” Mr Chakraborty informed. In a bid to make this gallery more user-friendly, the curator assured that efforts are being made to bring out three booklets, containing historical facts and information on these paintings.
