[1]Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday told a delegation of the Communist Party of India that there was no consensus yet among political parties regarding granting statehood to Telangana. Dr Singh made these observations when the Communist Party of India (CPI) delegation comprising national secretary D. Raja, AP secretary K. Narayana and others met him in Delhi and asked for a road map for formation of Telangana state.
The Prime Minister also told them that the UPA was unable to come to a decision on Telangana following divergent opinions expressed by leaders from different regions. Mr Narayana said that the Prime Minister, however, promised that the UPA would go through all relevant issues before arriving at a decision.
This comes as a blow to Telangana activists. Though there has been no official word regarding a possible announcement by the Centre on Telangana statehood, it had been presumed by leaders of various political parties in the state that the Centre would come out with a statement on the issue this month. TRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao, who is in Delhi, had hinted that he got favourable signals from some responsible leaders that Telangana state would be a reality by this month end. Communist Party of India state secretary Narayana, who recently concluded the party’s ‘Telangana Poru Baata’ programme had represented to the PM that the state should be immediately announced by the Centre.
