Twenty-four hours have already passed since Tuesday’s Metro rail bridge collapse which killed one and injured 16 people. Senior police officers however said that they were still completely clueless as to who they should fix the responsibility of the incident on.
A senior IPS officer said that even as they have registered a case of negligence, they are taking expert opinion from civil engineers from various government departments. Interestingly,
the police is yet to identify the site engineer, supervisor and
architect against whom they have registered the case. “We are completely clueless as to who we should pin the responsibility on, as we are not technical persons. We are consulting civil engineers working in various government departments, who can give us expert opinion on pinning the responsibility,” said an IPS officer, who is motoring the investigations, requesting anonymity.
The officer added that only the civil engineers could tell whether the construction was faulty or whether the company should have taken any precautions after the rains.
“We will have to check what stage the construction was at and how a constructed piece of the bridge just collapsed,” he said. The officer said that no arrests have been made in the case, but two people have been questioned. Through Wednesday, they were just verifying the documents pertaining to the bridge. “We are examining all documents of the contractor and the sub-contractor. So far, we have not identified the three persons ,” he said.
“The accused have been booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 304A for causing death due to negligence, 337 for causing hurt and 338 for causing grievous hurt by an act endangering life and personal safety of others and 114 for abettor present when offence is committed. No arrests have been made yet as the accused have not been identified,” said J. Giram, senior inspector of Sahar police station.
