The recent garbage fiasco in the city has forced the BBMP to brainstorm and strategise scientific garbage management and disposal in the city with a touch of Japanese and German technologies to dispose of the waste accumulated at the landfills at Mavallipura, Mandur and Terra Firma.
The BBMP plans a two-pronged approach for garbage disposal in the city by involving non-government organisations. BBMP commissioner Rajneesh Goel, speaking to reporters, said four companies have made a presentation on Tuesday on the disposal of accumulated waste at Mavallipura, Mandur and Terra Firma, and production of oil, gas and power. These companies have the capacity to process waste between 1,000 metric tonnes (MT) to 3,000 MT per day and have assured to give shape to their plan and function in the next 15 months. They are Unity Infrastructure Assets Ltd., Scogen, Nippon I-Clean Solutions Pvt. Ltd. and the Manipal Group.
Over 40 lakh MT of waste has accumulated at Mavallipura and over 20 MT has been dumped at both Mandur and Terra Firma. All four companies are confident of processing the waste scientifically and convert them into oil, gas and energy.
“All they need is land, tipping charges to provide input (garbage) and share profit. Request For Proposal (RFP) will be sought from all four companies before approving them. The successful competitor will bag the contract to execute the work, he added. During the presentation, Mr Vikram Gulecha, regional associate from Nippon I-Clean Solutions Pvt. Ltd said that the power generated from the plant may be either sold to Bescom or can be used by the BBMP for lighting street lamps. Mayor D. Venkatesh Murthy said that some companies have evinced interest in treating waste and they are at various tendering stages. Once they start functioning, the city will not have a garbage problem.
