[1]Seven outfits worn by former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher are being auctioned by Christie’s as part of an one-off sale of themed London memorabilia on September 3.
The seven outfits in different colours are currently owned by a private collector and have been each priced between £1,000 and £1,500 by the auction house.
Eighty-six-year-old Lady Thatcher had worn these suits during early part of her career and the outfits include the green suit she had worn on the day she was elected the Tory leader in 1975. All these outfits were worn by Lady Thatcher before she became the PM. Lady Thatcher, who was Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990, is suffering from dementia and is rarely seen in public these days. Her husband Denis Thatcher died of pancreatic cancer in 2003.
American actress Meryl Streep depicted her in the biopic The Iron Lady, which was criticised in Britain for its focus on her illness. Not many Thatcher-related items appear on the auction circuit in Britain. In June 2012, a handbag belonging to Lady Thatcher was sold for £25,000 in an auction. The black glossy leather bag, owned by the former British Prime Minister for more than 30 years, was pictured in a photograph taken as she walked alongside the then US President Ronald Reagan during her visit to the US in 1985. The London Sale by Christie’s, which is being held to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London, will auction over 150 lots, which range from paintings, topographical views, clothes, vintage posters and prints and memorabilia, the auction house said. An original double-decker Routemaster Bus, which dates back to 1966, is also on sale. The iconic London bus is estimated to sell for £20,000-30,000.
