Seven Master of Education (M.Ed.) colleges affiliated to Bangalore University have been barred from admitting students under the management quota this year. But they can take in students from the university quota. The university Academic Council, which met on Wednesday, took the decision after discussing a report filed by the task force on education headed by Academic Council member Karan Kumar H., which has stated that the colleges lacked required infrastructure.
The report said that all the seven colleges violated minimum standards fixed by the state government and National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). Rated against the compliance index, none of the colleges could be considered either good or excellent. Vijaya Teachers’ College has been placed under the average category, while the rest have heen categorised “poor” and “very poor”.
A few members at the meeting suggested that the colleges should be barred from taking any students. But later, the council decided to allow only university quota students and not management quota students. After the meeting, Vice-Chancellor Dr. N. Prabhudev said the colleges will be allowed to admit only university quota students.
“We will give these seven colleges six months to improve the facilities as per the suggestion of the task force. If they fail to comply, we will bring university quota students in these colleges to our campus. Permission granted to colleges will be cancelled,” he said. “All facilities should be provided to the MEd department in the university to accommodate these extra students. They will given guest lecturers, classrooms, labs etc,” he said.Earlier, Mr. Karan Kumar presented a document on how government rules have been bent in these colleges.
