In a desperate bid for a consensus on the Higher Education and Research Bill, human resources development minister Kapil Sibal has roped in law minister Salman Khurshid to placate the Bar Council of India, which is opposing the legislation.
With over a dozen major bills pending before Parliament, it is understood the two ministers are working overtime to ensure this bill is introduced in Parliament soon. The Bar Council is opposing the bill as it fears the HRD ministry will take away its power to regulate legal education in the country.
The HRD ministry is hoping the HER Bill will be a face-saver for Mr Sibal, who has not managed to get any major legislation enacted for over two years. The Bar Council is learnt to have got an assurance that it will continue to regulate basic legal degrees, and the bill will only establish a mechanism to regulate allied degrees.

Veteran actor Hangal, 97,passes away

Veteran Hindi film actor Avtar Kishan Hangal, 97, died at Mumbai’s Asha Par-ekh Hopsital on Sunday after a long illness. He is survived by 76-year-old son Vijay.
He was hospitalised after a hip fracture due to a fall at home. Few Bolly-wood celebrities we-re seen at his funeral in the afternoon.
