[1]An abducted Chennai college lecturer left small bits of papers, carrying her parents’ phone numbers, in the lodges where she was taken to and helped the police track her down to Ooty.
According to Mr Gilbert of Kulithurai, Kanyakumari district, K.G. Ramesh Kumar, 30, a prominent Youth Congressman of Marthandam, owed him nearly Rs 6 lakh.
Instead of returning the money, Ramesh sought the hand of his daughter Defi, 27. When Ms Defi spurned the proposal, Ramesh and three others came in a car on August 18 to their house and kidnapped her. A complaint was lodged with the local police.
Charging that Ramesh’s brother Udayakumar, a prominent figure in the ruling party in Vilvankode, was the brain behind the kidnap, Mr Gilbert said Ms Defi leaving a paper trail and the police tracking the cellphone calls helped them finally rescue her in Ooty.
Ms Defi told mediapersons she was taken to Kalakaad, Tirunelveli, Kodaikanal and, finally, Ooty.
“At Kalakaad, Udayakumar and some more persons tried to convince me to marry Ramesh.
When I refused, they tortured me and threatened to kill me and finish off my family… However, I handled the situation and in the lodges where we stayed, I left small pieces of paper with the phone numbers of my parents, pleading with the staff to communicate this to my family. That helped my family and police trace my whereabouts and finally rescue me,” she said.
