About 20 representatives of different associations from the North-East in Bengaluru met CM Jagadish Shettar and top police officials on Thursday at the CM’s office. Monika Khangembam, member, N-E Forum, that fought for Richard Loitam, and one among the representatives who was present for the meeting, spoke to DC.
Is the panic genuine or is it a reaction to a rumour?
People are just adding fuel to small incidents that have taken place among the North-East people. Such incidents have been happening since long, like calling them ‘Chinkis’ and asking them to go back. The incidents in Mumbai and Pune just triggered the reaction. On Wednesday, thousands went back to their native through the special train arranged till Guwahati, and on Thursday, thousands more were at the station while a few took flights. Fleeing is not the solution, people need to understand the situation.
How did the issue flare up?
Though there have been a few incidents that came to our notice, we have learnt that there has been some SMSes and MMSes which are being circulated among a particular community showing how a certain sections were beaten up in Assam. There were also rumours that local channels in Assam are showing how North-East people were being assaulted in Bengaluru. All such false information has led to the issue being blown out of proportion.
What was the outcome of the meeting with the CM and other local groups?
We have submitted a list of genuine incidents that have taken place and also talked about the rumours about SMSs and MMS. We have been assured of full security and protection. We also met the local groups and representatives from Muslim organisations have assured us of peace. Along with these representatives, we have formed a committee and will be in touch with DCP (Intelligence) V.S. D’Souza.
What would be your message to the NE population residing in city?
It is my humble request to all people that more awareness and understanding should be created. It was never a racial fight, but has been misunderstood.
