Former Assam chief minister and Asom Gana Parishad president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta here on Sunday slammed the ruling Congress government for its failure in containing the violence and restoring peace in trouble-torn Bodoland Territorial Council.
Mr Mahanta, who was on a tour of violence-hit area for past few days, told reporters, “While the state was reeling under the spate of a worst ever human tragedy, the ruling Congress leaders are busy in power tussle within the party to grab the chair.”
Referring Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s frequent remarks in press conferences, Mr Mahnata said, “Even chief minister Tarun Gogoi has claimed that one of the senior leaders of his party was trying to topple him with support of one of the UPA coalition partners.” In a hard-hitting remarks, Mr Mahanta said, “The government has lost its moral right to continue in office. The state administration has failed to provide security even to camp inmates who are feeling insecure.”
Mr Mahanta said that the 20-member team of AGP, which visited the violence-hit areas, found no security personnel at the camps they visited. “In such a situation, how will the displaced people get confidence to return to their homes?”
He also blasted Mr Gogoi for his claim to ensure the rehabilitation of all those uprooted by August 15.
Mr Mahanta expressed surprise that how a judicial enquiry and CBI probe would go simultaneously. He said, “Assam government should clarify if two enquiry on the same subject will not hamper the investigation.”
Mr Mahanta also asked chief minister to clarify his statement on involvement of external forces.
