Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah said on Thursday that a “love-hate relationship” existed between politicians and media and termed it as “supplementary and complimentary to each other.”
He asserted that neither politicians nor media can thrive without each other and that both these are important elements of the society which could be seen rubbing shoulders with each other for a “joint cause”. He asserted, “I won’t say a harmonious relationship does exist between politicians and the media but it is that of a kind of love and hate”.
He, however, lamented over what he termed as cultivation of the perception in present-day journalism that views are more important than news and the practice of publication of “paid news” by some newspapers.
“We observe that more space is being given to views than to the actual news flowing from all across in the garb of the perception that views are more important than news,” he said adding “There is need to take a holistic view to strike the balance between the two”. He believed in these not being any welcome developments.
The CM was speaking at a function here organised by the Tribune Trust of Chandigarh.

Sc dismisses jagan plea in da case

The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a petition of YSR Congress leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy challenging his arrest in a disproportionate assets case. A bench of justices Aftab Alam and Ranjana Prakash De-sai, however, sought res-ponse of CBI on a separate petition by Mr Red-dy, who is an MP, seeking bail in the matter.
The apex court issued notice to the investigating agency after senior counsel Ram Jethmalani, appearing for Mr Reddy, submitted that various principles relating to grant of bail set by the Supreme Court had been overlooked by the Andhra Pradesh high court and a CBI court judge while denying him the relief.
Mr Reddy had on July 23 withdrawn his bail plea, filed on July 9, challenging the HC order rejecting his plea in the disproportionate assets case against him.
Jethmalani had sought withdrawal of the application on the ground that he intended to file a modified application on the issue.
