In spite of contracts for various departments such as canteens, Arogyasri wards, parking etc. at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences having expired months ago, no fresh tenders have been called by the management. The rules state that tenders should be called a few months before the expiry of current contracts. Nims sources alleged that the expired contracts were being indefinitely extended as money was being paid to the management. More than Rs 1.5 crore is generated per month as revenues from these departments.
It has also been learnt that health minister Kondru Murali wants to change some of the contract employees, especially the security and half of the labour force, as they owe allegiance to the YSR Congress. To this effect, he has been repeatedly asking the Nims management to call for tenders, said a hospital source. There are around 700 contract workers in Nims. “The health minister has been repeatedly asking about the delay in renewal of contracts, as some contractors from the anti-Jagan camp have approached him showing interest in participating in the tender process,” he said.
Sources said as the current director’s term is ending on September 29, he is not calling new tenders. “Moreover, a sky-bridge has been proposed connecting the new and old blocks of Nims. The canteen might have to be shifted. That’s one of the reasons for not changing the canteen contract,” sources said.
